New charts mash-up the new and the old, the famous and the unsigned

Jun 2, 2008

The We7 streaming charts have been buzzing following a tenfold traffic increase in the first live week of Sony BMG's catalogue, building to 322,059 ad-funded streams after five weeks. Current chart hits from Leona Lewis, The Ting Tings and Neil Diamond share popularity with brand new artists and old favourites.

This is exciting news for new unknowns such as Klavar and Joy Walshe, who emerged through We7's community-voted "Tastemaker" process, and are amongst a selection of unsigned bands holding their own against big and established acts.

We7 users are actively exploring a wide range of genres from indie chart-hitters like Kings of Leon, The Hoosiers and Scouting for Girls, through the classic rock of the Kinks, Aerosmith and Uriah Heep, to music legends Bob Dylan and Lou Reed to evergreen favourites such as Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra - it's proving to be an exciting and unusual chart.

Clive Gardiner, We7's VP of Digital Content comments "Only 10% of our streamed tracks come from our Top 50. We7's users are showing themselves as discerning and adventurous, willing to explore lots of different music from the wide variety of artists and hundreds of thousands of tracks now available. Registered users on We7 can press one button and listen to the whole album... it's so simple. And the artists, labels and writers get paid for every stream."

We7 launched its new ad-funded music streaming service on April 28th. Every single track streamed and downloaded on www.we7.com has an audio ad dynamically grafted onto it, creating advertising revenues which mean royalties are paid to the artist/label - tackling piracy and helping build a fairer music industry. We7 is a British, ad-supported, DRM-free mp3 download and streaming service, launched in May 2007 by, amongst others, musician and digital pioneer Peter Gabriel. It has attracted 150,000 subscribers, and served 3.5 million ad-funded downloads from a choice of over 350,000 free tracks since launching in May 2007.

About We7

We7 is the first free and legal service of its kind in Europe delivering music in the way consumers want it. The service works by "grafting" short and relevant ads onto the start of music tracks based on micro-targeted consumer's demographics such as location, age and gender. The advertising attached to the music will ensure that artists receive royalties for making their songs available, whilst consumers will receive streamed music legitimately free of charge. We7 was shortlisted for the Music Week Digital Achievement Award for 2008, and has just been chosen by AlwaysOn as one of the OnHollywood 100 Top Private Companies.
