In our introduction to Rock, We7 invites you to explore some of the most popular Rock artists and albums of all time. We've taken some time to pick out the best and most innovative albums from this vast and diverse genre. We also have uncovered some hidden gems, such as Teenage Fanclub and Yes, in our playlist for an easy, instant guide to the wonderful world of Rock.
Bruce Springsteen
Although the title track of The Boss' 1984 album was mis-appropriated by the American right, the album still stands as homage to Springsteen's blue collar, New Jersey roots.
Rage Against The Machine
RATM's politically charged debut album fires on all cylinders, blending hip hop, punk and metal to create a fireball of noise that forces you to re-evaluate your entire belief system. Sit back and let the music change you.
Lou Reed
The record that broke Lou Reed as a solo artist. Many of the tracks on the album date from his time in seminal art rock band The Velvet Underground and provide an alternative, seedier, look at New York life. Produced by Velvets fans David Bowie and Mick Ronson, it includes the international hit Walk on the Wild Side.
Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan remains an icon to the baby boomer generation. This 1966 LP, his 7th studio offering, has been described as one of the best Rock and Roll albums ever. Dylan continues the Blues Rock theme of previous releases, whilst injecting a dose of his trademark surrealism and eclecticism into the lyrics.
Foo Fighters
The Foo Fighters have become one of the biggest selling American acts of the last 10 years. The ultimate Foo Fighters release, in the words of Front man Dave Grohl, the second half of the album are made up of acoustic tracks.
The Stone Roses
The Stone Roses perfectly captured the moment British Indie went over ground with their glorious self titled debut album. A perfect summery of all that was good about 80s Indie music, it added Acid House beats to create a sound that united Indie Kids and Ravers alike. With a not so subtle political subtext running throughout, The Stone Roses is a record that brims with confidence, arrogance and self assurance. Check out the extended jam on album closer I Am the Resurrection - never have four guys from Manchester sounded funkier.
My Bloody Valentine
Kevin Shields' 1992 release was 3 years in the making and nearly bankrupted his label. Yet the shoe-gazing masterpiece simply re-wrote the rules for many guitar bands. Loveless' lush soundscapes and driving, layered guitars inspired artists such as Oasis, Ride, Radiohead and electronica pioneers Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin.
Santana
After a long period out of the limelight, Carlos Santana made a blistering return to form with this record. Featuring well placed collaborations from Eric Clapton, Rob Thomas and Dave Matthews, the record earned Santana 9 Grammy awards and a number one US single, Smooth.
