We7 calls on music fans to celebrate underrated albums.
We7 today reveals some of the most underrated albums, in a bid to inspire music fans to experience artists' full song-writing and performances in the way they were originally intended.
Trends in buying music online mean fans often only download a couple of tracks by an artist, so miss out on the experience of listening to albums in their entirety. As We7 offers free music streaming online, fans can listen to whole albums for no charge, in the form originally created by the artist.
We7 has teamed up with music industry commentators and bloggers to develop a shortlist of underrated albums. The list includes:
- The Divine Comedy, Fin De Siècle (nominated by Victoria at Victoria's Jukebox)
- Gene, Drawn to the Deep End (nominated by Sean at PopJunkie)
- Charlotte Hatherley, Grey Will Fade (nominated by Stuart at My Chemical Toilet)
- Siobhan Donaghy, Ghosts (nominated by Stuart at My Chemical Toilet)
- The Beep Seals, Things That Roar (nominated by Mof at Electric Roulette)
- David Wiffen , David Wiffen (nominated by Mof at Electric Roulette)
- Black Crowes, Amorica (nominated by Stuart at Music Ally)
- Primal Scream, Give Out But Don't Give Up (nominated by Stuart at Music Ally)
- Idlewild, 100 Broken Windows (nominated by Jonathan at sex as a foreign language)
- Alkaline Trio, Crimson (nominated by Jonathan at sex as a foreign language)
We7 is encouraging album lovers to vote for their favourite from this shortlist, as well as giving their own suggestions for albums missing from the list at the We7 blog. The nomination with the biggest vote will be announced in the New Year.
We7 CEO, Steve Purdham, said: "We7 are big fans of albums, new and old. We've created a poll of the underrated musical masterpieces that never got the praise they deserved to raise awareness of the importance of the listening to whole albums. With the free live music streaming offered by We7, fans can listen to whole albums online for free and really get a get a much deeper experience of the artists and their abilities."
Sean Hannam of PopJunkie, commented: "By only listening to single tracks, music lovers are missing out on hearing classic albums as the artist intended them to be heard. You wouldn't want to just download a few tunes off The Beatles' Revolver, would you? At PopJunkie, we're huge fans of classic albums and we're pleased to come up with our own 'lost album' suggestion for the We7 poll."
About We7
We7 is the first free and legal service of its kind in Europe delivering music in the way consumers want it. We7 users can listen to music for free whenever they want, and buy whatever they love. The service works by 'grafting' short, relevant ads which precede the free music tracks based upon information known about the user, such as location, age and gender. This advertising ensures that artists and labels receive royalties for making their songs available, whilst consumers receive streamed legal music free of charge. We7 showcases exciting music of all genres from all four majors and loads of great independents in including PIAS, Finetunes, MTunes and The Orchard as well as directly from unsigned artists. Co-founded by Peter Gabriel, We7 received a BT Digital Music Award in 2008 for Best Music Service.
